Ellie Brown

FALMOUTH, CORNWALL

Ellie Brown is a sculptor exploring the dimensions of human experience through stone. Working with its form, weight, and tactility, she considers how sculpture can give physical expression to feeling. Her practice develops through an intimate dialogue with the material: its resistance, the movement of carving, and the possibilities revealed as a form emerges. Each work is shaped by this exchange between intention, physical process, and the particular qualities of the stone.

Brown works from a studio within a traditional granite quarry just outside Falmouth. In this male-dominated environment, she seeks to subvert the masculine traditions of stone carving, bringing intimacy and sensitivity to a practice often associated with strength and monumentality. The body is central to her approach, both through the physical act of making and in the encounter between a sculpture and the person experiencing it.

Created for McCully & Crane, Where the Body Continues marks a new chapter in Brown’s practice. The collection explores how bodily experience can find expression beyond the outline of the figure. These works consider the traces of touch and the persistence of feeling, inviting an encounter with stone as a material capable of holding something of our inner lives.
